Venice, Sarasota's southern little sister, enchants with its special quality of life and is still an insider tip for tourists. This pretty, small town has a population of approximately 20,000 and is located approximately 32 km south of downtown Sarasota and approximately 90 km north of Ft. Myers
Venice was developed in the 1920s as probably the first "masterplanned" city. This is still noticeable today. The town center with its abundance of small shops, antique shops, boutiques and restaurants around the palm-lined West Venice Avenue merges seamlessly into residential areas with tropical vegetation. The enchanting Mediterranean architecture is not limited to downtown, also known as the "Island of Venice". Many of the residential buildings in the area are also characterized by historical and new, graceful Mediterranean architectural styles. Since the beach in Venice connects directly to the mainland, you can easily reach it on foot or by bike. Venice is a truly "walkable" city.
East of the Intracoastal Waterway, which frames downtown, are many new residential developments, with and without a golf course. Although the miles of unspoilt beaches, a paradise for shellfish and shark tooth collectors, are certainly the main attraction for vacationers and residents, Venice has something to offer for every taste: grandiose river landscapes along the Myakka River (such as "Snook Haven", a "beer garden" directly on the river), the newly opened Legacy Trail is a paradise for cyclists, skateboarders and hikers and the countless waterways are an Eldorado for all water sports enthusiasts. Numerous golf courses in wonderful nature delight every golfer and there are several horse farms for equestrian enthusiasts.
Arts, crafts, vintage automobiles, prehistoric shark teeth and live music can all be admired at the numerous festivals, such as the annual Shark's Tooth Festival, held here regularly. Celebrities and wealthy residents and vacationers appreciate the Venice Municipal Airport, through which they can fly in discreetly with their own private jet.
